The Influence of Adolescents' Psychological Variables and Attachment with Parents upon Internet Game Addicts and Cellular Phone Addicts

ABSTRACT

The purposes of this study were to investigate trends and any correlations which may exist between adolescents' psychological variables, attachment with parents, internet game addicts and cellular phone addicts, and to explore these variables and attachment with parents affecting on internet game addicts and cellular phone addiction. The subjects consisted of 237 adolescents. The data were analyzed by means of frequency, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation and regression analysis using SPSS. The instruments were used Rosenberg(1965)'s Self-Eesteem Scale, Zung(1965)'s Depression Scale, Lee(2001)'s BIS(Barnett Impulsiveness scale), Choi(2008)'s Studying Stress, Armsden & Greenberg(1987)'s IPPA scale, NIA(2006)'s Internet Game Addicts Scale and Lee(2008)'s Cellular Addiction scale. The major findings were as follows: Self-esteem, study related stress and attachment were higher than the median. However, depression, impulsiveness, internet game addicts and cellular phone addicts were lower than the median. Impulsiveness was positively correlated with internet game addiction and cellular phone addiction. Attachment with parents was negatively correlated with internet game addiction but was positively cellular phone addiction. Study related stress was positively correlated with cellular phone addiction. Cellular phone addiction was positively correlated with internet game addict scores. For male adolescents, attachment with parents influenced negatively and impulsiveness and study related stress positively influenced internet game addiction. For female adolescents, attachment with parents, impulsiveness and study related stress positively influenced cellular phone addict scores. In conclusion, there is a clear and important to intervene when it comes to adolescents' impulsiveness and study related stress in order to reduce the incidence of internet game and cellular phone addiction.
