An Ecological Approach to Need-Assessment of Families with Mildly Handicapped Children: Implications for Family-Based Interventions at Healthy Family-Support Center

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to assess the needs of families with mildly handicapped children. The task was carried out to make implications for a family-based intervention program at the Strong Family-Support Center. The study employed an ecological model. Data were collected from 143 families with mildly handicapped children enrolled in early childhood education classes at integrated preschools in Seoul, Korea. The research addressed questions regarding the services and supports needed by these families and described the characteristics of the ecological variables which affect family functions, i.e., cohesion and adaptability, and empowerment of theses families. Based on the analyses of the need-assessments, implications and suggestions for the future study, especially for a family-based intervention programs at the Strong Family-Support Center, were further discussed.
