The Effects of Temperament and Mother's Reactions to Negative Emotions on Adolescent's Difficulties in Emotion Regulation

ABSTRACT
This study examined the effects of temperament and mother's reactions to negative emotions on
adolescent's difficulties in emotion regulation. The sample consisted of 379 students from middle and high
schools in the Seoul area. Using questionnaires, temperament, difficulties of emotion regulation and
mother’s reaction to negative emotions were reported by adolescent. The data were analyzed using t-tests,
Pearson's correlations and hierarchical regression analyses. The major findings were as follows. First, boys
showed a higher level of rigidity than girls. Mothers of boys showed more oversensitive-reactions to
negative emotions than mothers of girls. Second, rigidity, persistency, activity, mother's oversensitivereactions
and emotion-disregard-reactions to negative emotions significantly predicted adolescent's difficulties
in emotion regulation. The mother's reactions to negative emotions significantly predicted adolescent's
difficulties in emotion regulation even after controlling for the effect of the adolescent's temperament. The
result suggests that despite the effect of temperament, mother's reactions still play an important role in
the emotion regulation of adolescent.
