The Effect of the Paternal Parenting Participation and Parenting Efficacy on the Peer Competence of Preschoolers

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between father's parental involvement and
efficacy and the peer competence of their preschool age children. The subjects in this study were 222
preschoolers and their fathers in 18 different daycare centers located in the Chungcheong province. The
instruments used in this study were questionnaires concerned with the one's participation and efficacy as a
parent as perceived by the fathers as well as peer competence of preschoolers as measured by teachers.
Descriptive statistics, Pearson's product-moment correlation, hierachical multiple regressions were conducted
in analyzing the research data. The results showed that the father's involvement and their efficacy as a
parent was positively associated with their children's peer competence. The children were more adept at
building peer relationships when the fathers were less anxious and got less discouraged about child rearing
and engaged in helping their children to cultivate basic manners and acquire good life habits.
