ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to develop and verify the effects of a group music therapy program to reduce delinquency and aggression in adolescents. Based on the results of previous research studies, the program framework was developed with consideration of the psychological, cognitive and physical features of adolescents. The research subjects were 48 male junior high school students from S vocational high school who volunteered to take part in the program. Using a complete randomized design method, 16 students were placed into an experimental group, while the remaining 32 students were divided equally into two comparison groups of 16 each: Comparison group 1 and comparison group 2. A group music therapy program was implemented with the experimental group, while structured group counseling on a beautiful life was implemented with comparison group 1 and thirteen 90 minute lectures on music therapy were implemented with comparison group 2. This therapeutic program to reduce delinquency and aggression in adolescents was composed of three stages: trust development and cognitive stage; self-disclosure and understanding of others stage; and execution stage. Lee (1994) and No (1983) tests were used to develop the test instruments. After careful considerations, sixty eight items from Youngsuk Lee’s Adolescent Delinquency Test (1994) and sixteen items from the Anyoung No’s Aggression Test (1983) were selected as test instrument items to examine the effects of the program. The data from this study determined the mean and standard deviation before and after the experiment, and used the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) to measure the effects of the program. The findings demonstrated that the group music therapy program produced positive outcomes in reducing adolescent delinquency and also decreased adolescent aggression.
