An Initial Investigation into Self-Control and Self-Esteem as Mediators in the Link Between Parenting Behaviors and the Externalizing Symptoms of Middle School Students

ABSTRACT
This longitudinal study investigated the mediating effects of self-control and self-esteem on the associations between parenting behaviors and the externalizing symptoms middle school students. The participants were 3143 middle school students (2003-2004 panel 1 data of the Korea Youth Panel Survey). The results of structural equation modeling indicated that self-control and self esteem mediated the associations between time 1 parenting behaviors and the externalizing symptoms of time 2 middle school students, after accounting for the effects of time 1 middle school students\' externalizing symptoms.
