ABSTRACT
This study investigated the protective factors and risk factors and their role in middle school students\' life satisfaction. Participants were middle school students drawn from the KYPS (Korea Youth Panel Survey). The KYPS is a data survey of 3449 adolescents. The use of a data mining decision tree model revealed that: (1) Sex was predicted as a protective factor in boys with low attachment levels to their parents, but was predicted as a risk factor in girls with low attachment levels to their parents. (2) High academic achievement was predicted as a protective factor in terms of high stress over appearance in boys with low attachment levels to their parents, and low academic achievement was predicted as a risk factor in low stress over appearance in boys with low attachment levels to their parents. (3) High stress over appearance and low levels of monitoring by parents were predicted as risk factors for those with high attachment levels to their parents and higher levels of academic achievement.
