The Effect of the Multicultural Youth Resilience Improvement Program on Self-esteem and Self-expression

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to design and to develop a resilience improvement group
counseling program for multicultural youth and to analyze the effects of the program. This study
followed Kim Changdae’s (2002) systematic program development models. The experimental group
consisted of forty-one middle school students and the control group consisted of forty-two middle
school students. Group counseling was conducted divided into four groups. The resilience
improvement group counseling program consisted of 10 sessions were conducted throughout the 50
minutes twice a week for each session. The researcher interviewed and carried out the independent
t-tests and conducted the repeated measures analysis of variance(ANOVA). The results showed that
the resilience improvement group counseling program had significant effects on self-esteem,
self-expression for the experimental group. However, the results did not show significant effects on
self-esteem, self-expression for the control group. Therefore, resilience improvement group
counseling was effective in improving the participants’ self-esteem and self-expression.
