ABSTRACT
The study investigated the relationship between post-traumatic psychological maladjustment and
coping strategies with meta-analyses. A total of 17 studies including participants with traumatic
experiences were analyzed. The coping strategies were categorized by two distinctive classification
systems, approach-avoidance copings and behavior/problem-cognition/emotion oriented copings.
Psychological maladjustment was represented by depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress
disorder symptoms. The analyses yielded that avoidance coping was positively related to psychological
maladjustment, but approach coping was not significantly related. Behavior/problem oriented coping
was associated with depression and anxiety, and cognition/emotion oriented coping had a positive
relationship with anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms. When considering these two
classification systems together, both behavior/problem oriented-avoidance coping and
cognition/emotion oriented-avoidance coping were positively related to psychological maladjustment.
However, behavior/problem oriented-approach coping was not associated with any type of
psychological maladjustment, and cognition/emotion oriented-approach coping was positively related
only to anxiety. This result implies that avoidance coping is closely related to psychological
maladjustment and the decrease in the use of avoidance coping would be an important task in the
psychological intervention for trauma.
