ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to investigate the strategies and patterns which exist within the development process. The participant in this study is a gifted polyglot who was able to speak four languages by the end of elementary school. Data were collected from multiple sources, including a series of semi-structured interviews with the participant and her family, newspaper articles, broadcasting data and childhood photographs according to the case study protocol. Data were analyzed using open, axial, and selective coding as proposed by Grounded theory, following a qualitative approach. In particular, critical life events are selected in order to explicate how they have influenced and shaped the development process. The major findings of this study are as follow. First, a qualitative analysis of the transcripts revealed four phases of the development process: the interest period, primer period, progress period and transference period. Second, the study identifies two cognitive strategies and three action strategies; 1) unique communication strategy, 2) shadow learning, 3) life immersion, 4) repeated imitation, 5) active participation. These strategies collectively exerted a positive effect on the developmental process. Lastly, the findings indicated that each of the two learning processes, the active and the passive learning processes, havea different role in language acquisition. This study confirmed the notion that critical life events are useful in understanding the development process and suggested several essential educational methodologies to improve student achievement and development through reflection upon the development path.
