ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between Adult Attachment, Unconditional Self Acceptance and Social Distress within university students. It appeared that the causes of Adult Attachment were dependence, anxiety and closeness. The relationship and influences between each factor can be elucidated through path analysis. The Revised Adult Attachment Scale, Unconditional Self Acceptance Scale and Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale have been used as instruments to measure university students of both sexes. Our results revealed that the Adult Attachment and Unconditional Self Acceptance influenced students\' levels of Social Distress. Rising dependence and closeness factors, which are elements of Adult Attachment, increased the students\' Unconditional Self Acceptance and decreased the degree of Social Distress. Additionally, on the other factor of Adult Attachment, anxiety, when it decreases the Unconditional Self Acceptance also declines and Social Distress tends to increase. This path analysis indicated that Adult Attachment could have a direct influence upon Social Distress as well as it could also have an indirect influence through Unconditional Self Acceptance. It reveals also that Unconditional Self Acceptance had a direct influence upon levels of Social Distress. In conclusion, Unconditional Self Acceptance is influenced by the factors of Attachment and it has also influences the relationship between Attachment and Social Distress. Instead of a direct effect of Adult Attachment over the Fear of Negative Evaluation, the indirect effect trough of Unconditional Self Acceptance is bigger. In order to lower the Fear of Negative Evaluation, rather than the emotional concept of Attachment, the cognitive self acceptance level was found to have a direct and significant influence.
