The Characteristics of Response to Draw-a-Story Tests in Relation to Depression and Suicide Ideation of Soldiers

ABSTRACT
The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between the responses of soldiers found in DAS (Draw-a-Story) by Silver and their levels of psychological depression and suicidal attempts and ideation. A total of 353 soldiers who are doing their military service in the Seoul and Kyunggi-do regions served as the participants in this study. The results of the study are as follows; Firstly, low points in DAS correlated to high tendencies in depression and suicide-thus it was found that the points of DAS reflect such psychological states. Secondly, when the differences in the relationship between self-image as exhibited within the DAS and the objects are analyzed, we find the following results. The differences of self-images can be described in this way there are many \'unfortunate\' self-images in the depression group, in the group having the highest suicidal tendencies, there are a greater number of \'unfortunate\' and \'aggressive\' self-images, and in the group exhibiting low tendencies towards suicide, the self-images are predominantly \'happy\'. Moreover, when we investigate the differences between the objects there are close correlations between harming the other objects in the groups having the higher tendencies towards suicide. Thirdly, as we investigate the differences in the degrees of space usage and detail description, the group showing the higher tendency towards suicide uses much more detailed descriptions than the other groups. Fourthly, in terms of the differences in self reports, there are significant differences according to the degree of depression felt. That is, the depressed group exhibits low points in self reporting, in such a way that the degrees of self reporting reflect the degrees of depression.
