The Effect of Emotional Intelligence on Interpersonal Relationships and the Life Satisfaction of University Students

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of emotional intelligence upon the interpersonal relationships and life satisfaction of university students. The participants were 168 undergraduate students. The instruments used for the study consisted of the emotional intelligence scale, the interpersonal relationship scale and the life satisfaction scale. Correlations and multiple regressions were conducted for the purposes of data analysis. The results of the study were as follows. First, emotional intelligence was positively related to interpersonal relationship and life satisfaction. Second, motivation and emotional management predicted interpersonal relationship. Third, management of one’s emotional status, emotional awareness and motivation predicted life satisfaction. Fourth, male and female students did not differ in their scores in terms of emotional intelligent, with the exception of empathy.
