ABSTRACT
This study investigated the predictors of cognitive development in children who are in receipt of public financial assistance. The participants consisted of 305(age 6-8) children in receipt of assistance from the Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs. Use of a data mining decision tree model revealed that emotional competency, parents’ involvement and interest in children’s school life, watching TV(inside of a week), use of the internet(within a week), poor diet, and parental levels of education all influenced cognitive development in children in receipt of public financial assistance. Above all things, emotional competency most importantly influenced cognitive development. Out of all the subjects investigated, the children who had the highest level in cognitive development are those who combine high emotional competency, use of the internet(within a week), and parents who participated in parental education.
