Development and Validation of the Sensation Seeking Inventory for Adolescents

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a sensation seeking inventory for adolescents. In the first step, preliminary items from previous scales and responses of open-ended questionnaires were administered to 854 adolescents. Data were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis to uncover three principal factors. The Sensation Seeking Inventory for Adolescents(SSIA) showed high internal consistency and provided evidence of concurrent validity and discriminant validity. In the second step, data were collected from 394 adolescents, in order to test the cross validity of the SSIA. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis supported the cross validity of the SSIA(CFI=.90, TLI=.92, RMSEA=.05). The final version of the Sensation Seeking Inventory for Adolescents was composed of 20 items with three factors including thrill and adventure seeking, deviant experience seeking and novel experience seeking.
