The Characteristics of Elderly People’s Play: A Content Based Analysis

ABSTRACT
This study used content based analysis to explore the characteristics of elderly people's play, the meaning of 'well-playing' and a 'well-playing elderly person' and the physical and psychological changes manifested after playing. The subjects of this study were 47 people over the age of 65. Interviews were the main methods employed. The collected data was analyzed in terms of content analysis. The subjects engaged in physical exercise, games such as Hawtu, computer games and Baduk, friendly conversation and artistic activities such as singing and dancing. The subjects expressed positive emotional and cognitive reactions to the activities. They also showed a positive response in terms of psychological changes after play. Except for the opinions of a minority, they showed positive responses in terms of physical change.
