ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to develop and then test the validity of a Multicultural Acceptance
Inventory(MAI) for Korean children. The preliminary Multicultural Acceptance Inventory was developed
through a literature review of issues related to multicultural acceptance and the results of in-depth
interviews which were conducted in order to understand the multicultural context in Korea. The subjects
of this study were 392 children from the 4th to 6th grades from five elementary schools in Seoul,
Kyunggi-do and Incheon. The data were analyzed respectively by descriptive statistics, Cronbach's alpha,
test-retest reliability, split-half reliability, and explanatory factor analysis. The results of the analysis were as
follows: 1) The content validity of the inventory was confirmed by two groups of experts. The construct
validity of the Multicultural Acceptance Inventory was supported by exploratory factor analysis. There were
4 sub-factors of 33 items in the Multicultural Acceptance Inventory: multicultural competence,
multicultural awareness, multicultural openness, and multicultural empathy. 2) The reliability of the
Multicultural Acceptance Inventory indicated adequate internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and
split-half reliability. These results support both the reliability and validity of the Multicultural Acceptance
Inventory.
