ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was 1) to develop program for nurturing children's emotional intelligence and
2) to examine the effects of such a program. First, a program was developed based on Mayer and
Salovey's Emotional Intelligence model, the standard Edu-care curriculum of the Ministry of Gender
Equality and Family in Korea, and surveys on emotional intelligence programs from both parents and
teachers. The program consists of 16 sessions. Each session includes various activities for motor skills,
music, art, and literature. Second, 78 children in Seoul and Kyounggi province participated in this study
in order to test the effects of the program. Thirty-seven children in an experimental group joined in 16
sessions of the program for 8 weeks, and 41 children in a control group did not take part in the
program. Our analysis of covariance(ANCOVA) indicated that experimental group displayed higher levels of
emotional intelligence compared to the control group in the post-test, supporting the argument that the
program has an effect upon children's emotional intelligence.
