ABSTRACT

\"Most studies assessing the link between parenting behaviors and child behavioral problems have focused primarily on parental behaviors as a cause and behavioral problems as an outcome. This study focused on both the parent effects and child effects and the mutual interplay between parenting (PAR) and internalizing (INT) and externalizing behavioral problems (EXT). The present study also explored the longitudinal transactional effects between INT and EXT, while testing the mediating effects of PAR in reciprocal causal relationships between INT and EXT. Structural equation modeling, based on cross-lagged panel model, was used to analyze four annual waves of data from 2,844 children taken from the Korean Youth Panel Study. The results suggested that INT and EXT were concurrent and reciprocal during childhood. Both child effects and parent effects were supported: Changes in children\'s INT and EXT were influenced by a lack of parental attachment and supervision. PAR were also related to subsequent increases in INT and EXT. The results also supported the mediating effect of PAR in reciprocal causal relationships between INT and EXT, impling that one domain of behavioral problems undermine PAR; in turn, undermined PAR leads to an increase in the other domain of behavioral problems during childhood. Implications are discussed in order to better understand the use of developmental models of cascades and to improve preventive interventions for such child behavioral problems. Key words : internalizing problem, externalizing problem, parenting, child effect, parent effect\"
