ABSTRACT

\"The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between a mother\'s personality, maternal parenting stress and parenting behavior and to investigate whether the mother\'s personality (neuroticism & extraversion) has a moderating role between parenting stress and parenting behavior. Data were collected from 350 5th-6th grade children and their mothers via questionnairs on parenting behavior, parenting stress and personality type. Correlation analysis and multiple regression were carried out for the purposes of data analysis. The results revealed that 1) Maternal parenting was predicted by parenting stress but not by personality, indicating that the more stress mothers perceive themselves to be under, the lower degree of warm parenting mothers exhibit. 2) The mother\'s personality, in particular, sociable or active extraversion, tended to moderate the association between parenting stress and parenting behavior. Specifically, mothers with high sociable or active extraversion characteristics were likely to exhibit permissive and uninvolved parenting styles while under higher parenting stress. Moreover, mothers with high sociable extraversion characteristics exhibited lower rejective and restrictive parenting styles while under less parenting stress than lower sociable extraversion. Key words : Maternal parenting stress, Parenting behavior, Personality, Neuroticism, Extraversion\"
