ABSTRACT
The purposes of this study were to uncover the relationships and correlations between collectivismindividualism,
family resilience, ego resilience and social adaptation. The subjects were 295 university
students. The data were analyzed by means of frequency, Pearson's correlation, and regression analysis,
using the SPSS. The instruments used Shin(2001)'s depression and social adaptation of general mental
health scale, Triandis(1994)'s collectivism-individualism index, Yu(2004)'s Family resilience of Family Health
Scale and Block & Kremen(1996)'s Ego resilience scale. The major findings were as follows; Collectivism
and individualism were positively correlated with family resilience, ego resilience and social adaptation.
Additionally, family resilience was positively correlated with ego resilience and social adaptation. Ego
resilience was positively correlated with social adaptation. All the variables differed significantly according to
the university students' gender and family resilience and ego resilience differed significantly according to
the university students' family economic status. Second, collectivism and individualism had a positive
influence upon family resilience. Family resilience had a mediating effect upon collectivism-individualism
and social adaptation. Third, collectivism and individualism influenced ego resilience positively. Ego
resilience had a mediating effect on collectivism and social adaptation. Therefore, educational programs and
counseling programs aimed at increasing levels of social adaptation, family resilience, and ego resilience
should improve the quality of life for university students.
