The Effect of Mothers’ Smartphone Dependency on Adolescents’ Smartphone Dependency: The Sequential Mediation Effect of Mothers’ Positive Parenting Attitude and Adolescents’ Peer Relationships

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study is to examine whether the positive parenting attitude of mothers and the quality of adolescents’ peer relationships have a sequential mediating effect in the process in which mothers’ smartphone dependency affects adolescents’ smartphone dependencey. For this purpose, a total of 2,137 adolescents (1,148 males, 989 females) were analyzed using data from the 1st year of the middle school 1st year panel of the Korea Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018. The results are as follows. First, mothers’ smartphone dependency directly affected adolescents’ smartphone dependency. The higher the mother’s smartphone dependency, the higher the adolescent’s smartphone dependency. Second, the influence of mother’s smartphone dependency on adolescents’ smartphone dependency was sequentially mediated by mother’s positive parenting attitude and adolescent’s peer relationship. This study revealed a process of intergenerational transmission between mothers’ smartphone dependency and adolescent’s smartphone dependency. This study also emphasized the role of mothers’ positive parenting attitude and adolescents’ peer relationships in the process of intergenerational transmission of smartphone dependency.
