ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study is threefold: to investigate the types of association between maternal parenting and educational support in the online classes; to examine the differences in self-directed learning of 1st grade elementary school children according to the types derived; and to identify whether teachers and fathers are influential factors in determining the maternal types. Data were collected through online surveys from 400 mothers who have 1st grade elementary school children. Statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS 25.0 and Mplus 8.0 to compute for LPA, ANOVA, and multinomial logistic analysis. The major findings are as follows. First, the relationship between maternal parenting stress (PS) and learning involvement behavior (LIB) are divided into four types: stable (low PS - high LIB), struggling (high PS - LIB), common (moderate PS - LIB), and lethargic (high PS - low LIB). Second, children s self-directed learning was highest in the stable type and lowest in the lethargic type. Third, the more active the communication with teachers and the father s involvement in child-rearing, the more likely the mother would be in the stable type. This study emphasizes the role of mothers in children s self-directed learning and the importance of teachers and fathers.
