The Influences of Child Abuse on Adolescents’ Behavioral Displaced Aggression through Experiential Avoidance, Social Anxiety, and Anger-in: Focused on Gender Difference

ABSTRACT
The purpose of the study is to examine the influences of child abuse on adolescents’ behavioral displaced aggression through experiential avoidance, social anxiety, and anger-in. In addition, the study aims to verify the effect of gender difference in structural relation. The participants were a total of 500 adolescents (245 boys and 255 girls) in middle and high school of South Korea. The participants completed questionnaires by self-report. The data were analyzed using t-test, correlation analysis, structural equation modeling (SEM) and multiple group analysis. The results of the study are as follows. First, child abuse had a significant direct effect on adolescents’ behavioral displaced aggression. Second, child abuse had significant indirect effects on adolescents’ behavioral displaced aggression through their experiential avoidance, social anxiety, and anger-in. Third, the influences of child abuse, experiential avoidance, social anxiety and anger-in on adolescents’ behavioral displaced aggression showed in different ways across gender and reported a significant gender difference. In conclusion, this study has a significant implication of an environmental and psychological mechanism of adolescents’ behavioral displaced aggression. The results of this study suggest that the access of an appropriate discriminatory intervention across gender is important to prevent or decrease behavioral displaced aggression in adolescents. Therefore, this study is expected to help understand and prevent behavioral displaced aggression in adolescents.
