ABSTRACT
Using a multiple mediation model, this study examines the two types of cognitive emotional regulation strategies and parenting stress as mediators in the relationship between grit and postpartum depression. Two hundred and thirty-one first-time mothers with infants and toddlers aged 0-2 years participated and the self-reported data were analyzed by Process macro (Model 80). The results showed that there was no direct effect of grit on postpartum depression but both simple and double mediating effects of maladaptive cognitive emotional regulation strategies and parenting stress were significant, The relation between grit and postpartum depression was further mediated by adaptive cognitive emotional regulation strategies and parenting stress. These findings indicate that grit can protect first-time mothers from postpartum depression by enhancing cognitive emotional regulation strategies, and destressing parenting stress. These findings are further discussed in light of grit as positive psychological resources for first-time mothers’ adaption and well-being.
