ABSTRACT

The purposes of this study are to classify the latent types of dual-earner families’ child care during elementary school breaks, and to examine the antecedents of the profiles and differences in parenting stress in South Korea. We analyzed the survey data of 660 dual-earner families (253 fathers, 407 mothers) living in Seoul with elementary school children using the latent class analysis with a 3-step approach. As a result, four types were derived: (a) private education-home care (48.6%), (b) public care-private education (20.6%), (c) home care-oriented (20.0%), and (d) self-care-private education (12.6%). Higher grades of children were related to the ‘self-care-private education’ group compared to the ‘private education-home care’ group, and the ‘private education-home care’ group compared to the ‘home care-oriented’ group. Also, higher household income was related to the ‘private education-home care’ group rather than the ‘public care-private education’ group. As for parenting stress, the ‘home care-oriented’ group reported a lower level of parenting stress than the ‘private education-home care’ and ‘self-care-private education’ group. Based on the results of this study, we discussed the need for various types of childcare support reflecting the needs of individual dual-income families with school-age children.
