ABSTRACT
This study examines the mediating effects of mother's social competence in the relationships between social support for mothers of elementary school-aged children and educational support activities at home during the COVID-19 period. Analysis was conducted using data on 308 mothers having a child in a transition to a higher grade from the Panel Study on Korean Parent Educational Involvement (PSKPEI) in 2020, and carried out by bootstrapping using the IBM SPSS Statistics 26.0 program and SPSS Process Macro. Our main findings illustrated that social support for mothers had a significant direct effect on their educational support activities at home during the COVID-19 period and had an indirect effect on the educational support activities at home through their social competence. In other words, when mothers have high level of social support, they tend to have a higher levels of social competence, in turn, leading to better educational support activities at home. This study empirically confirmes the importance of social support for mothers on educational support activities at home for their children by placing emphasis on mothers’ social competence.
