ABSTRACT

The present study investigates the effects of a program for the positive selfconcept of older adults. The program is based on the relationship of autobiographical memories and self-concept and is composed of understanding oneself by recalling important life events, accepting oneself, learning communication skills, and planning for the future. Twenty older adults of an experimental group participated in the program for seven weeks and they were compared with 20 older adults of the control group without any treatment. Before and after the intervention, all participants were tested using the self-perception, self-acceptance, self-integrity, self-esteem, depression, and subjective well-being scales. ANCOVA was performed using SPSS 21 to verify the effects of the program. The results showed positive change in self-perception and self-integrity. These findings suggest that this program may help the self-concept of elderly people to be more positive. Study implications, research limitations, and suggestions for further research were discussed.
