ABSTRACT
This study aims to classify the types of parental competence among mothers of third graders and compare their levels of parental psychological reactions and support activities to their child’s education. Latent profile analysis and one-way ANOVA were conducted using data from the Panel Study on Korean Parental Educational Involvement (PSKPEI) in 2019, which included information on 377 mothers. First, the study classified the latent profiles of parental capacity into five distinct types: low parenting competence group, low psychological competence group, medium level parental competence group, medium competence with high parenting competence group, and high- level parental com-petence group. Second, parents in the medium level parental competence and medium competence with the high parenting competence group exhibited higher levels of pa-rent-child identification, while the parents in the low psychological competence group showed the highest level of psychological withdrawal. Third, study guidance was the high-est in the low psychological competence group, and medium competence with high pa-renting competence group, but the high-level parental competence group displayed a moderate level. This study confirmed the presence of different types of parental com-petence among the mothers and identified variations in parental psychological reactions and educational support activities based on these competence groups.
