ABSTRACT
A purpose of this study is to examine the moderated mediating effect of cogni-tive empathy on the effects of adolescents' attention problems on academic helplessness through peer relationships. 2,265 male and female adolescents in the first year of middle school surveyed in 2021, which is the 4th wave data of the Korea Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018 produced by the Korea Youth Policy Institute, were selected as research subjects. SPSS 27.0 and the PROCESS macro version 4.2 (Hayes, 2022) programme were used to analyze the data in this study. The mediating effect of peer relationships was sig-nificant in the pathway from adolescents' attention problems to academic helplessness, and the moderating effect of cognitive empathy was significant in the pathway from ado-lescents' attention problems to peer relationships. Therefore, adolescents' attention prob-lems affect their psychological attitudes toward peer relationships and academics and are a cognitive factor that also affects social relationships and academics. In addition, the cog-nitive empathy ability to recognize other people's emotions is another resource for ap-proaching attention problems. These findings provide a basis for further research to iden-tify cognitive and social factors that mitigate adolescents' academic helplessness.
