ABSTRACT
This study examined the relationship between mother's over-protectiveness and adolescent' anxiety. In order
to expand the scope of our study of this relationship, special attention was paid to the possible effects of
mediation on adolescent' autonomy. The subjects consisted of 252 1st and 2nd graders of middle school
(147 boys and 105 girls) residing in Chung Nam Dajeon city in South Korea. It was found that the
levels of a mother's over-protectiveness were negatively related to adolescent' autonomy, and anxiety to a
significant degree. Adolescent' autonomy was found to be a significant mediator in the relationship
between a mother's over-protectiveness and adolescent' anxiety. These findings indicate that adolescent'
autonomy may function as a pathway between a mother's over-protectiveness and adolescent' anxiety.
