ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between maternal child-rearing attitude, attachment stability and school-related adjustment. The subjects for this study were 424 children in 5th and 6th grades of 3 elementary schools in Incheon. The collected data was analyzed by SPSS statistical program. The frequency and percentage were calculated to investigate the general characteristics of the subjects. For each research problem, multiple regression analysis, simple regression analysis, and path analysis method were used. The major results of this study are as follows: First, in the relationship between maternal child-rearing attitude and attachment, the more acceptable and autonomous maternal child-rearing attitude was, the higher attachment was in the male group. In the female group, however, the more acceptable, autonomous and unexcessive the maternal child-rearing attitude was, the higher was the attachment. Second, in the relationship between maternal child-rearing attitude and school-related adjustment, both of the male and female groups adapted well to the school when the maternal child-rearing attitude was acceptable. Third, in the relationship between attachment and school-related adjustment, the higher attachment to the mother in the male group, they adapted well to the school in the following order: relationship with teachers, school class, school rule, and relationship with peers. In the female group, the higher attachment to the mother, their adaptation order was like these: school class, relationship with teachers, relationship with peers, and school rule. Fourth, in the relationship between maternal child-rearing attitude, attachment and school-related adjustment, the more acceptable maternal child-rearing attitude and the higher attachment, the male group could easily adapt to the relationship with teachers and peers, school class. In the female group, it made them adapt well to the school class. We found that attachment has more effects on school-related adjustment than maternal child-rearing attitude for the male and female groups.
