Study on the children\'s understanding of numbers in everyday life and mathematical achievement

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to examine what children know about written numerals in their everyday environment and how they use this knowledge to reason about situation. It is also to know children\'s mathematical achievement in number understanding including cardinal number, space, numbers, quantity, one-to-one correspondence, and order. In addition, we try to find the relationship between the children\'s understanding of numbers in normal life and their mathematical achievement. Sixty children who go to kindergarten in Daejeon were participated in the study. The Picture Test and The Instruments designed for child interview were used to measure children\'s knowledge of numbers and mathematical achievement respectively. Data were analyzed by ANOVA, using SPSS. The result of the study are as follows: First, the children\'s number understanding has a meaningful difference with the ages but not with the gender. Second, with ages, there are meaningful differences in scores of the cardinal number, space, numbers quantity, one-to-one correspondence, and the order. Third, there is a significant relationship between children\'s understanding of numbers in everyday life and their mathematical abilities.
