ABSTRACT
The aim of this study was to validate measures of a mother's reaction to adolescent's negative emotions. The validity of the scale is presented in a series of studies. Through preliminary research, the first preliminary items were composed and an initial survey of 498 middle school students in 1th - 3th grades was carried out. Using exploratory factor analysis, three principal factors and 36 items were revealed to be most suitable. The factors of the scale consist of emotion-coaching-reaction, emotion-disregard-reaction, and emotion- minimizing-reaction. In addiction the reliability analysis and validation analysis of the scale, was conducted, making use of a survey of 506 students. The internal coherence reliability was also verified. There were four additional verifications to validate the scale. Firstly, for the evidence based on internal structure, confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the reliability of the factor structure of the scale. Secondly, in order better understand the relationship between the variables, correlation analysis was used and as a result, indicated that the overall scale and each of its subfactors correlated significantly with the scale of the adolescent's perceptions of the child rearing attitudes of the mother. Additionally, in term of prediction validity the correlation analysis revealed that the subfactors of the scale were correlated significantly with emotional regulation strategies and resilience. These results verified that the scale can be utilized as a predictive scale of the abilities of adolescents to regulate their emotions and their overall social resilience. Lastly, discriminant validity was found to exist between the problem behavior groups and non-problem behavior groups which ensured the validity of the scale.
