The Effects of a Phototherapy Program on Self-Consciousness and the Perceptions of the Purpose in Life of University Students

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects on self-consciousness and the perception of the purpose in life of university students by a applying phototherapy program. The subjects of research consisted of a total of 30 students. 15 students(6 male, 9 female) were arranged into the experimental group and 15 students(5 male, 10 female), were organized into a control group. The experimental group participated in the 3 hours long program which took place over 8 sessions and lasted approximately 3 months and normal lecture were provided to the control group. To examine the effects of the program, tests were taken by the two groups before and after the program was conducted through two measuring tools, the Self-consciousness tests sheets and the Purpose in Life Scale test sheets. The collected data were processed for both average and standard deviation per each criteria to make t-test and ANCOVA, in order to better discern the differences between the two groups. As a result of this study, the experimental group showed a statistically significant increase in self-consciousness and in Purpose in Life Scale. In conclusion, the phototherapy program indicates that it had positive effects; participants were able to increase their levels of self-consciousness, and to increase their levels of purpose in their life. It is expected that this study will be helpful for further work which seeks to make use of phototherapy in a variety fields.
