The Influence of Middle School Students’ Perfectionism, Family Strengths, and Satisfaction with School Life upon Anger Expression Styles

ABSTRACT
This study explored the effects that perceived perfectionism, family strengths, and satisfaction with school life have on anger expression styles on the part of middle school students. The subjects consisted of 287 middle school students and self-reporting questionnaires were used to collect data. The data were analyzed by means of correlation, and ANOVA. This analysis revealed the following results. First, anger adjustment and satisfaction with school life were higher in boys’ than amongst girls. Second, the relationship between the factors showed that a higher level of perfectionism, family strengths, and satisfaction with school life was associated with a higher ability of anger adjustment, higher perfectionism and higher anger suppression, and lower satisfaction with family strengths and school life was associated with a higher style of expression and suppression. Third, the relative influence and the factors which affects anger expression style, family strengths and satisfaction with school life were meaningful variables to help the ventilation of anger, and family relationships, perfectionism, satisfaction with class and class activities, and self-oriented perfectionism were meaningful when it came to anger suppression. These results indicated that social support is necessary for adolescents to help control their anger. Suggestions for the implementation of anger control programs based on personal characteristics were also outlined in this paper.
