ABSTRACT
The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between emotion awareness deficits, cognitive
emotion regulation, and adolescent internalizing symptoms. The study sample consisted of 297 high school
students from the Seoul and Gyeonggi areas. The factors of emotion awareness deficits, emotion regulation
strategies, depressive symptoms and social anxiety were assessed using the self-report questionnaire method.
The data were analyzed using t-tests, Pearson’s correlations and multiple regression analyses. The major
findings may be summarized as follows: first, the factor of emotion awareness deficits was positively
associated with maladaptive emotion regulation, depressive symptoms and social anxiety. Additionally,
maladaptive emotion regulation was related to both depressive symptoms and social anxiety. Second,
maladaptive emotion regulation played a role as a partially mediating factor on the relationship between
emotion awareness deficits and internalizing symptoms. However, the effect of adaptive emotion regulation
on depressive symptoms and social anxiety was different. These findings suggest that emotion awareness
and emotion regulation strategies play an important role in determining adolescent depressive symptoms
and social anxiety.
