A Preliminary Study for the Standardization of the Korean Bayley Scale of Infant and Toddler Development, Third Edition Social-Emotional Scale

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this Study was to develop the Korean version of the Social-Emotional Scale of the Bayley
Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, 3rd Edition(K-Bayley-Ⅲ) by analyzing the reliability and validity of
the scale and examining the adequateness of each item. The subjects for this study included 384 Korean
infants and toddlers in age range of 15 days to 42 months 15 days residing in Seoul and Kyonggi province.
Data were analyzed through the SPSS 21.0, the BILOG-MG3, and the Mplus 2.14. Results of the study were
as follows: As a result of analysing the degree of difficulty of the items, it was shown that the degree was
similar arranging in the child's age groups. Result of the inter-item consistency reliability and Standard Error of
Measurement(SEM) showed a high reliability of the scale. The test-retest reliability level was extremely high.
Exploratory factor analysis estimated a six-factor structure on 35 items. The sensory processing items and the
total Social-Emotional Scale had a correlation of .63-.96, depends on age-group. In terms of convergent
validity, the Social-Emotional Scale of K-Bayley-Ⅲ and that of the K-ASQ:SE showed significant correlations of
-.61, and also showed significant correlations with the CARS, a correlation of -.56. This study demonstrated
that the preliminary version of the K-Bayley-Ⅲ Social-Emotional Scales contained items that were properly
translated and applied to assess social and emotional development sequences and skills of Korean infants and
toddlers.
