ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of mindfulness on psychological discomfort in
pregnant women, and their romantic attachment to their partner as a mediating factor. The subjects
comprised of 182 women in their third trimester of pregnancy in J province who had participated in the
first wave of the Korean Attachment Longitudinal Study (KALS). Data were analyzed by means of
frequency, percentages, Cronbach’s reliability coefficient, and partial correlation using SPSS 20.0 and
structural equation modeling through AMOS 20.0. The findings were as follows. First, the degrees of
mindfulness, romantic attachment and negative psychological discomfort of the pregnant women in their
trimester of pregnancy were above the median score. Second, the model proposed by this research
demonstrated the effectiveness of using the structural equation model for analysis, and showed that
romantic attachment had a partial mediating effect on the pregnant women's mindfulness and psychological
discomfort, which was further proved as being statistically significant by means of bootstrapping. These
findings suggest that the mindfulness of pregnant women needs to be increased in order for their
psychological discomfort to be reduced. Moreover, it may be further deduced that there is a need for
pregnant women to feel securely attached to their husbands.
