ABSTRACT
The purpose of the study was to examine the patterns of parenting attitudes and investigate the
relationship between classified clusters of parenting attitudes and their adolescent children’s personal
characteristics. The data was analyzed using cluster analysis and one-way ANOVAs. The results
suggested three proper clusters, according to the characteristics of mothers’ parenting attitudes.
Cluster 1 was categorized as ‘confused-oversensitive’, cluster 2 was categorized as ‘neglected-coercive’,
and cluster 3 was categorized as ‘stable-receptive’. Additionally, the differences between adolescent
children’s personal characteristics in each cluster showed distinct points of interest. In terms of the active
emotion regulation method and the support seeking emotion regulation method, clusters 1 and 3 appeared
to be more significant than cluster 2, whereas cluster 3 showed the highest level in resilience, followed by
cluster 1 and 2, respectively. This suggests that mothers’ affirmative parenting attitudes are still important
during adolescence for their child to grow and develop in an adaptive manner. The results of this study
provided a deeper understanding on the operation of specific clusters of mothers’ parenting attitudes and
adolescent children’s personal characteristics.
