The Effect an Emotional Intelligence Program on Emotional Quotient And Academic Achievement of Elementary School Children from low-income families

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of an Emotional Intelligence Program(EIP) on Emotional Quotient & the academic achievement of elementary school children from low-income families. The subjects of this study were 20(third grade) elementary school children in seoul. EIP was administered to 20 elementary school children from April 2004 to July 2004. Experimental group has taken EIP(Lee, 2000). Emotional Intelligence Test(Moon, 1996) were used. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS program. T-test was utilized to determine the impact of the EIP on the children\'s emotional quotient and academic achievement. The major findings of the study were as follows, First, the children who was exposed to the EIP excelled the control group in empathy, emotional control and emotional utilization. Second, the children who participated in the EIP excelled in academic achievement. The above-mentioned findings suggested that the EIP had a good effect on enhancing the emotional quotient and academic achievement of the elementary school children from low-income families. In a word, emotional education could make a contribution to facilitating the balanced emotional and cognitive growth of children from low-income families.
