ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of adolescents\' fathers\' and mothers\' parenting behaviors on their I-consciousness and We-consciousness. The subjects of this study were 354 adolescents in a middle school and 2 high schools located in Seoul and Jeju. The Korean Parenting Behavior scale was developed by Lim(2003), and the I-consciousness and We-consciousness scale developed by Cho(2002) were used to assess adolescents\' self development. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, two way ANOVAs, and stepwise multiple regression analyses. The results of this study indicated significant differences in I-consciousness and We-consciousness in terms of adolescents\' grade and gender. The lesson factor of paternal parenting and the attention factor of maternal parenting perceived by adolescents explained positive I-consciousness and We-consciousness development. On stepwise multiple regression, maternal parenting perceived by adolescents explained more I-consciousness and We-consciousness in self-concept development than paternal parenting did.
