The Relationship between 3- and 5-year-old children\' private speech and their mothers\' scaffolding

ABSTRACT
The purposes of this study were to (1) investigate children\'s private speech during the individual session for maze task according to their age and sex, (2) investigate maternal scaffolding during the mother-child session for maze task according to their age and sex. Subjects were twenty 3-year-old children and twenty 5-year-old children and their mothers recruited from day-care centers in Seoul. Mother-child interaction was videotaped for 15 minutes and maternal utterances were transcribed for analysis maternal scaffolding. Individual session of child after 3-5days was videotaped for 15 minutes and children\'s utterance was transcribed. Maternal scaffolding was categorized as verbal strategy and physical control strategy. Private speech was analyzed after classifying it as subcategories. The statistical methods used for data analysis were frequencies, percentiles, means, standard deviations, t-test, two-way ANOVA. As the major findings there was a significant age difference in girls\' using private speech and relevant speech with the task. during individual session. and there was a significant difference in maternal scaffolding during dyad session according to age and sex. Compare to 5-year olds mothers, 3-year old mothers use much more other regulation and control, teaching, and others strategy in the verbal strategy. there was a significant age difference in using mother\'s the other strategy in the verbal strategy speech of girl\'s mothers.
