ABSTRACT

This study examines the mediating effect of anger rumination and the moderated mediating effect of sadness rumination on the influence of adolescents' trait anger on relational aggression. A total of 383 middle school students aged 14 to 15 years old living with their parents in South Korea completed a self-report questionnaire. SPSS 29.0 and PROCESS macro 4.2 were used for data analysis. As a result, adolescents' trait anger indirectly influenced relational aggression through anger rumination. Furthermore, the moderated mediating effect of sadness rumination was significant in the process of adolescents' trait anger influencing relational aggression through anger rumination. In other words, the higher the trait anger, the higher the level of anger rumination, which in turn increases relational aggression. At this point, the higher the level of sadness rumination, the smaller the mediating effect size of the mediating effect of anger rumination. Therefore, adolescents' sadness rumination may play a role in alleviating the relationship between anger rumination and relational aggression. The study also lays the foundation for a more three-dimensional understanding of emotional and cognitive factors affecting adolescents' relational aggression by including sadness rumination beyond an anger-centered approach.
